So my new snowbird neighbor across the street from me owns a high end meat market in Ontario. We have become pretty good friends & I taught him how to make lox, & pastrami. So when he came down he brought a huge cooler of meat from his shop, and last night he had us over for a few drinks and a salad. Only thing was the salad had strips of A5 Waygu ribeye on the top. I have to say that I have never had anything like that in my life. After seeing it I thought it would be real fatty tasting. But the fat just melts out & the meat is so decadent I just didn’t know what to say. I can now check one more item off my bucket list. I will say this though, there is no way you could sit down & eat more than a few bites of this because it is SO rich & filling. Well maybe when I was a young man I could have wolfed down a whole steak, but 4 of us split 1 steak & we were all full. Can’t wait to see what he brings down next year! :emoji_sunglasses:

A5 is a whole other world isn’t it? Glad you got another one checked off.

Wow, that sounds so fantastic. I have always wanted to try to do a Wagyu brisket cook. There is a local Waygu producer that I want to purchase from. I may have to have a good day at the casino to get one of these though. :emoji_dizzy_face::emoji_laughing: His prices are per cut not per pound which I found odd.

I bought a "Texas Wagyu" strip steak at a local butcher shop here and it was fantastic. I know "real" Wagyu comes from Japan, but I've never heard of "A5". I went over to the local Costco website and discovered a 12 pound A5 Wagyu ribeye roast priced at $1,100. Wow!
Yeah - I've heard that called "Wangus." Kind of a slang word, I think. Short for American Wagyu. SRF sells it. I bought an American Wagyu last summer - a short rib plate. Mine was "Black Grade." They also sell American Wagyu "Gold Grade" which has even more marbling and is almost double price.

Mine was 7.3 lbs.

It was very nice.

Not as nice as A5 though

Definitely a great neighter; and a generous one! I am glad ( and a little jealous!) you were able to experience that. That is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

congrats.

Perry’s Steakhouse has a ribeye tasting flight with a Nebraska beef, a Texas Wagyu, and a Japanese A5.

3 oz each, $99. It is freaking amazing. My boss took a bunch of us there last month.

Now that is a neighbor to have. Waygu is on my list also. Too bad you didnt get any pics.

Jim

Honestly Jim, I was so surprised at the meal, it never even crossed my mind to take photo’s. If there is a next time I will definitely take some.
Al

Always good to be treated to something we would not normally buy.

Keep him on your good side :emoji_yum: :emoji_yum: :emoji_sunglasses:

David

There is no way that I would ever buy this, so yes it was a treat!
Al

A5 is a whole other world isn’t it? Glad you got another one checked off.

Thanks B, and yes your right A5 is another world!
Al

I was at a prime steak house the other day and they had an A5 6oz fillet for a cool 150.........some day.....

That is a bit rich for me too, but for a special occasion, maybe!

It is probably American Wagyu, I don’t think you can buy A5 anywhere except from Japan. The steaks were packaged & shipped direct from Japan.
Al

Sounds like a great meal Al.
Thanks Jim, and yes it was quite a meal.

I have never had any piece of meat that you could even compare this to.
I guess that is why it is so expensive.

This is one thing that I never thought I would be able to cross off. Oh, & he also sells Pork from Spain, I think it’s called Iberico, and it’s supposed to be better than any of our heritage brands. He might have a rack or 2 of ribs in his freezer!

I smoked a 15lb A5 brisket years ago. Quite the experience I will say, but a 1 time thing 😃

I doubt that I will ever have the chance to do an A5 brisket, but maybe another steak next year!

I Can’t imagine how much that short rib plate would cost if it was A5.
Al

Al, Nice neighbor and that salad sounds delicious!

They are both terrific cooks & the salad was phenomenal!
Al

Awesome experience! Definitely a great neighbor to have!

I guess I’ll just keep feeding them BBQ, and maybe I’ll get another taste of something special again!

Thanks Kim,
All I can say is if you get the opportunity to try just one bite, you will remember it forever!
Al

Great neighbor Al.
I wonder how he got that cooler of meat across the border?

He said since he has property in Florida & spends 6 months here, he is allowed to bring a certain number of pounds of frozen meat for his own consumption. I thought he said it was 40 lbs.
