I have a 40 year old step-son who has Down Syndrome. Yesterday morning, he came down with what seemed to be a simple stomach virus ...... vomiting and the like.

He was still pretty sick throughout the day, today, still not being able to keep anything down. The wife took him to the ER late this afternoon.

They diagnosed him with sepsis and low blood oxygen.

He is a very sick boy. He is in good hands where he is at, but I ask for prayers for him, the medical staff caring for him, and my wife, especially.

Prayers. Septis isn't good. Wife got it from kidney stones. She was basically unresponsive when I got home.

Firstly, I'd like to thank all y'all for all the prayers!

Update: They transferred him to another hospital over night and he was put in ICU, where he still remains, but they have his blood chemistry all back in order. He's doing well and may be home by the weekend. He has responded well to treatment.

What we thought was a stomach virus was actually severe diabetic ketoacidosis, which turned into sepsis. It is a damn good thing my wife took him in for treatment.

He has diabetes and they had him on two different kinds of insulin. For some reason, the one he gets at night was tanking his blood glucose early in the morning. He went into seizures one morning last week and we had to call 911.

After that, my wife took him to a diabetes clinic at the university of Kentucky. The endocrinologist there put him on a different shot at night, but the pharmacy couldn't fill it because of medicaid BS.

So basically, what happened is that there was not enough insulin in his system to make use of blood glucose. That caused his body to start burning fat, which built up ketones in his system, sending him into ketoacidosis.
