I have a 40 year old step-son who has Down Syndrome. Yesterday morning, he came down with what seemed to be a simple stomach virus ...... vomiting and the like.

He was still pretty sick throughout the day, today, still not being able to keep anything down. The wife took him to the ER late this afternoon.

They diagnosed him with sepsis and low blood oxygen.

He is a very sick boy. He is in good hands where he is at, but I ask for prayers for him, the medical staff caring for him, and my wife, especially.

Prayers for him and your family.

Hey Doug, Hope recovery continues.

Diabetes is a rough one. One of my girls has type 1 and she is a pretty fragile diabetic. Initially the road to regulating blood sugar was rough. She is on a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) and an insulin pump now which seems to "easier" to monitor. Her husband also gets the blood sugar alerts, so if she sleep through it or leaves her phone behind he can jump in.

She had a little issue getting it initially - Insurance of course - but if they havent looked into getting one for him, of these might be something to try. Just a thought/suggestion.

He is back home!

Well, remember I said his blood sugar spiked yesterday right before they were going to let him come home?

Seems that they sent him a grilled cheese sammy and a huge plate of French fries for lunch ......... not exactly a diabetic friendly meal, the ketchup wasn't even sugar free. what the hell were they thinking?

No wonder his sugar spiked to 300!

Today they sent him a piece of grilled chicken on a huge bun and a big pile of mashed taters for lunch. My wife told him that if he ate that mess, he'd be staying another night! He passed on the lunch, lol

She gave them a piece of her mind for what they were sending a diabetic patient to eat!

Now, mind you, he doesn't adhere to the strictest diet at home, but for crying out loud, these are supposed to be professionals in a hospital setting bringing him these meals.

Sadly, we need to participate in our and our families healthcare to make it all work.

Local Hospital serves meals ala Carte. Kitchen staff doesn't know jack due to HIPA.
Did he order the meals or is it what was served?

It has always been my experience that a dietician is in charge of specialized diets for patients. HIPPA doesn't enter into it on the kitchen end, they just need to prepare the meal ordered.

If this has changed, they need to go back to the old way. If a patient requires a specialized diet for diabetes, or what have you, the medical staff should see to it that nothing is sent to them that they can't eat. Now mind you, visitors can bring stuff in that the patient shouldn't have, but nothing forbidden should be delivered on a meal tray from the hospital kitchen.

They should know. Medical information is limited but still necessary for kitchen staff. Cause if they cook for patients, means they're involved in patient care. They're just not aloud to talk about or share information. Our hospital has a kitchen staff that works on med/surg and takes orders according to dietary restrictions for that very reason. Sounds like a staff didn't communicate that.

Lmao, He said he misses my meatloaf. Wife told him he had meatloaf twice in the hospital. His answer was yeah, but Doug's is better!

Gonna have to whip up a meatloaf for him soon.

Almost nothing they sent him would be fit for someone with diabetes. He liked it, mind you, but none of it was what one would consider a diabetic friendly diet.

Thats a shame, you would hope they would be mindful of that. But definitely glad to hear he's doing better.

Glad your stepson is doing better. Make his favorite meal when he feels up to it, to celebrate his return to health.

Sounds like a win/win situation, I get to eat meatloaf too.

From what I have seen, hospitals and rehab facilities will send whatever is "ordered" regardless of dietary issues. My father in law was getting biscuits, pizza, cheese cake even though he is a type 2 on 2 different insulins and 4 oral meds for diabetes.

That is severely messed up. I know at one time, patients who were on restricted diets because of their health issues were only given meals that were in line with the specific diet they required.

Seems like it would be a liability issue for the hospital kitchen to be sending meals that would be harmful to the patient, but what do I know.
