Should I put wood in the smoke chamber and burn out good before using?
Yes sir...get a roaring fire going right inside the cooking chamber...and then a good sanding with a wire brush (angle grinder or drill).  Follow up with seasoning after the burn and sanding.

Looks great and has given me an idea. I build a double barrel smoker with my dad, but this looks smaller and better for the space I have. What did you use for the firebox? I'm guessing it is a custom build. Wish I had a welder...Smoke on!EDIT: If I had enlarged the picture I would have seen that it was in fact custom. What thickness did you use?

I think it is 1/4" but not sure it was a big piece I had laying around

I'm wrong it is 3/16"
