Good evening
Looking at purchasing first electric smoker for my son and myself to set on the porch. I was looking at this one to get started since I don't need anything real big for just the 2 of us. Just planning on smoking some of the basics, chops, ribs, chicken, brisket etc.
Looking for some opinions from people much more experienced in this than myself. Thanks in advance for any comments and guidance

Masterbuilt 20071117 30" Digital Electric Smoker

Great Price, but it is a Gen 2. There are other generations with better reputations for longevity and smoker design. Gen 1 or gen 2.5 are both reputed as better units. There are mods to improve the design, but not too sure about the reliability of the electronics.

actually, i'm pretty sure the linked model is the Gen 2.5 - the 'two level' water tray. The gen. 2 has the square bowl like water tray just on the right side. That's a very good price for the gen 2.5.

That one is a Gen #1, and a Great Price!!

On Edit, that one is a New Hybrid.
It has the Gen #1 exterior, with the Gen #2.5 insides.
Excellent Smoker

Thanks everyone for the response and the advice. Couple more things. With it residing mainly on the front porch that is covered is it still a good idea to get a cover. Also have read that it is best to take the controller off and keep inside when not in use. Thoughts? Also bought a ThermoPro TP16 to start out with.

Mine is on the front porch under roof, but some rain or snow can blow in that far a few times a year, so I keep a cover on mine.
I had my MES 30 Gen #1 out there for a year, my MES 40 Gen #1 out there for 6 years, and my MES 40 Gen #2.5 out there for 2 years, and I have never removed the controller. Never had a problem.

These tiny delicate pin connectors aren't designed for repetitive connecting even when the tab that locks the connection is removed. If you want, try it till it fails. You can always get more substantial connectors if this is the route you want to tale.

Yup,
Also it's obvious that Masterbuilt had no thoughts about removing the controls when they went from the exterior box controller to the built in controllers on the top front of the Smoker.
It's not a major job to remove, but I certainly wouldn't want to do it often.

2 I looked at were both 30s . One digital and the other Bluetooth.

The drip pans were different and the Bluetooth had more space between the left wall and the heat shield .
The Bluetooth drip pan would not fit inside the digital smoker at all.. that's strange.

Inside 30 digital

Now you're just babbling.
Both of those pictures are of the newer model interior. Seeing the inside has nothing to do with whether it's Bluetooth or RF.
It could be the bottom of a Gen #2.5, which would be Bluetooth, and it could be the bottom of a Hybrid with the Gen #1 exterior which would be RF & with the 2.5 interior.
Why are you still worried about this. I've explained it to you on 3 Threads.
There are NO Gen #1 Bluetooth units.

I go through this one more time:
There are the following:
Gen #1---RF
Gen #2---RF
Gen #2.5---Bluetooth
Hybrid Unit---Gen #1 exterior with the Interior of a 2.5---RF
And there may be other Hybrids, but so far none of them are Bluetooth.
