This is my 1st smoker build. I have read a lot on this site. There is a lot of very helpful info here. I will post pictures as I go and would greatly appreciate any input and help along the way.

Looks like you are off to a good start. If you have any questions I’m sure the good people here will be able to help you. I did a build out of a 500 gallon tank. Are you going reverse flow or not?

Yes it will be a reverse flow. There seems to be an amazing amount of knowledge on this site. I have used the calculator and a lot of the info and pictures here on my design.

Keep the pictures coming. I find this kind of project really interesting. Probably because I don't have any welding or fabricating skills. Used to paint cars during the first several years of my career.

Working on firebox. Have read about putting a plate at the top of the firebox with an air gap between the plate and the top of the box that extends into the CC. Good idea or not? If so how far into the CC does the plate need to extend? Have pieces cut out and ready to weld up. Will post pictures as I go.

Got pieces for the fire box cut out. Air inlet holes in both sides low and up high on the door. Got the door made. Still have to put slide damper and track on the door and sides. Ready to start welding the fire box together.

Looking good. Built like a tank. Fire it up by Thanksgiving?
Hope so. Depends how much time I get to work on it. Probably more like 1st of the year. Hoping to get the fire box welded up by end of next week. To me that’s the most time consuming part of this.

Fire box welded up. Still have to make wood basket and rails. Ready to fit up to CC to mark cut out. Will have more time this weekend to work on it.

I cut circles out of 1/4” plate and put a slight bend in them on the press to match the radius of the tank. Welded them inside and outside. Then buffed the outside smooth.

Finally got some spare time to work on smoker. Got the trailer ready to mount tanks on. Got the RF plate and drains welded in. Ready to start on racks.
