I am brand new to SMF. This is my first post and I just ordered Jeff's book from amazon yesterday. I bought a Masterbuilt 30 in Electric Smoker about a month ago. It's been so bad weather wise here in Ofallon Mo. all I've done so far is smoke a ham in it. Looking forward to learning a lot about smoking in the future. I'm 72 yrs. old, a retired carhauler from Jack Cooper Transports in Wentzville Mo. Been a retired Teamster for 10 yrs.

I have a question or two. I went to the Dr. and found out I have high blood pressure and should not use salt. I bought a new MES in Jan. ordered Phill's Book and his rub and sauce. The rub has salt in the recipe and if I brine any meat I guess I need salt for that too. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can use in place of the salt for these things that won't screw up my already high blood pressure (170 over 90)? I hope I'm posting this thread right. I'm a newby and not sure what I'm doing on this site!

Hey, I've tried some salt substitutes and really didn't find anything I liked, Just try a spice or two you like instead of the salt. I know it's hard to do because everything has salt in it. Mrs. Dash has some seasoning's that don't have salt, I am sure there are other brands.

Gary, Thanks for replying to my question about a sub. for the salt. I will look in to the Mrs. Dash products. The Dr. is wanting me to stay away from salt altogether. I don't know how I'm going to do that. All this right when I'm starting to get into more serious about  BBQing and smoking. Thanks again Gary H.

Sea salt, would that be ok ?? Not sure but I have HBP too and started using sea salt...... Hope maybe this helps !! Justin

I don't think sea salt will help because we were using sea salt for everything when the Dr. found the high blood pressure. Thanks anyway though Justin.
