wood pellets or chips

Hi Guys,

I accidentally bought a bag of pellets when my smoker calls for chips.  I have a masterbuilt sportsman elite.  

I just cured it using the pellets and after curing, most of the pellets were black and only a few pellets were actually smoldering.

Does it make much of a difference if someone was to use pellets instead of chips?  What are the pros or cons and/or things to watch out for?

If you want the pellets to smolder properly you need to use a smoke generator. Look at the Amaze N Smokers that Todd has.

I looked at the product your link takes me to.  I am not sure how I would use it though. Would I try to place that thing full of pellets right on top of my electric element?  It looks like I only have about a one inch clearance.  How tall is that unit?

Set the smoker tray on the bottom of the smoker under the water tray next to the heating element.

The tray is great, especially for long smokes.  For shorter smokes, I normally still use chips.
