I’m the oddball that doesn’t like mayo and oil/vinegar, mustard, etc. so I like whole leaf for protecting the bread from tomato juice while also providing some additional moisture to the sandwich.
But on my Italian subs I got in the habit of green peppers and spinach when I was on the road and had more shredded lettuce in my lap than inside me.

Whole leaf, whatever kind of lettuce. Mainly because no matter how careful I am, shreds always end up in my lap.

I made my first BLT in quite a while a few days ago. I used a spring salad mix for the L and cherry tomatoes for the T.

It as was so good I just bought two more packs of bacon.

another classic I had yesterday, I made a grilled cheese with bacon.

I had one last night minus the lettuce.

Since a few people joked about lettuce... I REALLY like a good salad with steak. There is world of lettuce and salad outside of iceberg. A good place to start is caesar with romaine. Ken's is my jam and throw a bunch of fresh ground BP and shredded parm on it. Typically for steak dinner here it would be a mix of greens. Bold stuff makes iceberg taste like water. Sliced red onion, some cherry tomato halves, maybe some olives, then from here green apple slices or maybe pear, then some goat cheese like bleu or gorgonzola. Now and then I throw some nuts in like toasted walnuts. I'm typically a ranch guy and often will add a light drizzle of balsamic. There's some magic interaction with a good salad and the grilled steak.

chopsaw chopsaw Kinda funny I thought you were posting grilled romaine. Was a big thing a few years ago. Now grilled cabbage is the rage.

Depends. A po-boy must have shredded iceberg lettuce imo. That's what I was raised on. Finely shredded at that.
Any other sub/hoagie can have either, but I prefer shredded.

White/wheat/sourdough loaf breads get iceberg leaves or leaf (red or romaine - something of that nature).

I don't much care on burgers. It's all good.

Tacos gotta be shredded iceberg.

Here is where I draw the line. I want my tomato slices thin. I will put half a tomato on a BLT or a mater sandwich but I slice them down around an 1/8" and pile on slices.

BLT on lightly toasted, enough mayo to float the Ark, alternating layers of bacon and tomato (extra pepper on maters) - a bit of lettuce ---- I'm done Son!!!
I've never eaten any type of sandwich and thought "Boy, lettuce would make this delicious". It's got little nutritional value, especially just a leaf or two. The stem in each leaf is gross, the white part at the bottom of head lettuce is disgusting. Bottom line is that risk is nowhere near worth the potential reward. Now, tomatoes? That is a different story, but only if it's a fresh tomato and not the cardboard, rock hard kind that you get at most restaurants and fast food places.
