Radio&TV for 20 years. Decided to grow up and get a real job and entered the IT field 11 years ago. Now director of IT for a division of a large government agency. Before all that, a Mess Management Spe******t (cook) in the Navy for two years.

Wow, what a fun thread. Lots of interesting stories.

Well, I have had two distinct careers. The first was 20 years as a software design and development engineer. Worked for a Fortune 100 Company. Eventually left and started my own business. Two actually. One was an Employment Agency where we worked under contract to major IT firms or major firms who had large IT departments. This company would advertise, recruit, screen and give hiring recommendations on senior staffing issues, for our customers. The other company was an IT Consulting firm. Here, I employed the Engineers directly, and we developed major applications, under contract, for our customers. (IBM, Microsoft, Intel, HP, Floating Point Systems and the like)

Sold out and retired in 2000. Moved to my little fishing shack on the Oregon coast. Since then have been fishing, clamming, crabbing and diving for these same tasty critters, just as often as I can.

My wife can retire Christmas of 2008 so I am currently doing some contracting(half time) for an organization that is funded by the Federal Government. We will both chuck it in at the end of next year.

Lately been trying to dodge the flooding, since I am only 10 feet from the river bank. Good news is, I donâ€[emoji]8482[/emoji]t have to go far for the fish. The Salmon and Steelhead come right to my back yard.

Worked for a propane company for 7 years and then made a change.
Been a Deputy Sheriff since then, about 11 years now.
Specialize in "special" people. You know, the crazy ones.
When not doing that I am traveling all over to get fugitives.

I work as a "Crash Test Dummy" kidding.. I was a carpenter for 32 years, After having back surgery back in 2003 and 2004 and countless spinal injections as well as accupuncture, chiro and bio feedback I had to leave the trade. I was self employed so there was no other income comming in and I'm not a stay at home kinda guy. It took me over a year to fight back and walk a short distances. So in 2006 I decided to go back into construction and did my last job in that trade <so I thought> I had to leave it behind me. The wife and I always wanted to open a bbq joint <surprised eh> lol .. This was just the push we needed. I'm on my feet all day and some nights as well. For some reason working construction was alot easier that running a restaurant. So now ya know why we made the big move.. But, it's nice to take the hobby you love and do it for a living, Although I smoke meat each day <kinda like the movie "Ground hog day" > I still enjoy it. I've met some very interesting and fun people in the past 6 months and most seem to enjoy thier experience.

Spent 22 years installing and testing various weapon systems and radar on newly constructed navy ships.(Northrop Grumman Ship Systems). About eight years ago I decided to try something different and transferred to the fire dept. in the shipyard. Been a fireman ever since and love it. One day (24hrs) on and two off gives me plenty of time to fire up the smoker.

I am a retired Deputy sheriff after 25 years. Now I drive the big trucks hauling logs, dirt with dump trucks and roll-off trucks. If my health holds out I will try and stick with it.

WOW!!! What a great thread - amazing stories and a lot of neat jobs.

I have been at a digital mapping company for about 10 1/2 yrs - NAVTEQ. I primarily worked with our Spain and Portugal field offices for about 7 years and now work with the Asia/Pacific offices (New Zealand, Australia, Indonesia, and others).

I really enjoy my job; we get to meet people from all over the world. We have our field offices go out and drive all the roads and then we (mainly the production office in Fargo, ND) take that information and put it into our own software program for GPS navigational systems. We are the directions behind that voice that tells you to "turn left" in your car.

Before that I worked as a Travel Agent. I do miss that and maybe someday I will go back to that. Although I do not miss getting yelled out from passengers about lost luggage and flight delays!!!

i can dig it - i worked on boats all my life & lovethe gps- i learned all mine by dead reckoning & celestial navigation- gret up when it was still loran b and c... ya mean mossy actualy works.... lol

My job is simple; I like it that way. I sold vehicles for 12 years and towards the end of that I was realizing that the evenings and weekends were cutting in to the time I had to spend with my teenage sons so I changed careers.....

I use to do what my wife does for a year and a half. Then another career change.........

I also worked for Microsoft for 3 1/2 years.....
