Well I finaly pulled the trigger

Yes thats right I finaly talked the better half into a pellet grill. I ordered a YS640 from atbbq.com. I ordered it on July first and they said it should ship from them tomorrow the tenth or Friday the eleventh. I have read every thing I could find about my new toy, but any helpful hints would be great.

Congrats on the new pellet muncher. That Yoder is great cooker. The quality of the pellets you use makes a difference in the smoke flavor so while you're waiting you might want to research that. You're gonna love that thing.

Did the burn in at 400 and seasoned all the grates at 350. Really didn't have time to play arround to much

with the temps. Now the fun part starts learning how my new toy really works!!!

Great looking pellet pooper!  Remember to use the "continuing education" angle; and then a little sweetener of some pulled pork or smoked goods might make the boss a little more flexible on your schedule.

I finaly got some time to procede with my "continuing education" on the new Yoder!! This thing is amazing.
If I could I would post some pictures but everytime i try to reply today there is no option for inserting pictures.
Anyway I loaded the Yoder up top and bottom racks with bacon just to see where the hot spots were. Turned it on and set it at 160. Hand my 732 pit probe @ middle of the grate 2 inches from the left hand side. As soon as the controller display read 160 and went into maint. mode the 732 read 160 also I let it ride @ 160 for about 20 min. and the two temps never varied more then 1 deg. The temp. of the grill never went above 163 or below 160.
I then moved the 732 to the middle of the upper rack and bumped the controler up to 200 setpoint. When the controler read 200 the middle of the upper rack was @ 195 and this 5deg diffrence remained the same for the entire time I left the 732 there. I then moved the 732 probe to the right side of the lower rack and turned the controler up to 250. I was amazed that there was no differance in temp from left to right what the controler read my maveric read +or - 1 or 2 deg. This test was all ran with the damper in about 6 inches from full open.
The bacon showed the temp. differance between the top and bottom shelves, it took longer to get done. The top shelf and the bottom shelf both cooked evenly from side to side. The only hot spots I found I already knew about and that was close to the front and rear of the bottom shelf where the heat comes arround the diffuser/drip plate.
And by the way the bacon was great on our BLT's with fresh Tomato from the garden.

Its a damn fine pellet pooper...i just got mine last week (Sunday) and have already used it 3 time. Your's is a lot better than mine (i went with a char-broiler because i wasn't sure how much i would like it) but they are definitely a lot of fun. Yoders are built like tanks...

Had some more time to play arround with the Yoder yesterday, the temp. does seam to drift up and down a little bit more at higher temps. Still I can live with that. So far everything we have had off of this pit has been good. Put a ten pound butt on this morning before i left for work, set the pit for 225 and drove away confident in the fact the Yoder will just sit there takin care of business while I take care of mine.

Wolfman, don't be too concerned with grill temps especially if it's running empty. These things need to be broken in and they need meat, lots of it! I've only had mine since March but the most stable seems to be when I did a 23 hr smoke with a brisket and butt on the bottom, 4 racks of ribs on the top and ABT's scattered around both shelves. You then need to find the sweet spot with the damn dampener, I try and keep track of the position my counting the rods on the side shelf. I use the handle end to gauge and seem to get the best temps somewhere between the 6th and 8th rod, not counting the outer most rod.

JTRAINOR56 Thanks for the info: I use the same method you do to keep track of where the damper is. I am very happy with the temps. and really never did realy get to freaked out on any of my pits if they swing a few degrees up or down. I am so confident in the Yoders control that I did,nt even put my Maverik pit probe in there yesterday while cooking that pork butt.
