These Ge refrigerators water filters have a chip on them so you have to get from them and there are $$. I was able to get the label off last one and use on regular filter but not so lucky this time. I ordered a filter and now without cold water and ice until it gets here. I called Ge when I did last filter and was suppose to send bypass but never did. Just got done with chat and suppose to send one. We will see. If I can bypass will buy an external filter. I seem to be having a time lately with special made products!

Yeah, seems dishonest. Companies add extra tech, which doesn't add anything to the product except eliminate competition on stupid disposable parts. Then they are incentivized to make those parts need turn over more frequently.

Major scam.

Our GE will take non GE filters, but they didnt really work well. little pieces of plastic would come out in the water.

At my old house we have an external filter under the sink that fed the ice maker (didnt have the water dispenser on the refer) loved the external one.

Right-to-repair is big issue for consumer advocate groups versus manufacturers of everything from cell phones to farm vehicles. Once a company is big enough to intimidate - or collaborate with - any would-be competition, growing corporate service departments is way easier and more lucrative than actual innovation and problem-solving.

Similarly, as more products become tech-enabled and internet-connected, companies are also looking to make more products into subscription services. Pay a monthly fee, or else the expensive thing you "bought" gets bricked. But they swear it's totally not extortion! Lesson learned from the medical (treatments-not-cures) industry.

At least we can still build our own stick-burners...

Great. Just bought a GE yesterday.

Eight people coming over for dinner Friday and the damn refrigerator chooses to die. Won’t be delivered until next week. Eight frikin years old. The garage refer is over twenty five and going strong.

There is a reason old guys are grumpy.

Yep, My neighbor was just telling me that he had the same issue... I will let him know he should reach out to GE. His biggest complaint is that they have R.O. hooked up and the filter is still required and needs to be "changed" when GE says it has had "XX Gallons" run through it... seems a bit shady...

Yeah Brian it took me 3 calls to GE to get the bypass plug. pulled that sticker off and placed on the back wall behind the filter and I can use the non rfid filters now,

Have him get the free bypass plug from GE, that is what is meant for, when using an external water treatment system.

FWIW. the GE filters go by date, not volume. (XWFEmodel)
I've just given in to the fact that its going to be $50 each to replace.
My GE was completely replaced with new by GE under warranty (long story.
our city water is very drinkable, but the ice maker slows way down when the filter gets funky.
FWIW the service guy from Bodewell (GE operated) told me he could get them much cheaper but it was a hassle for me. Also the generics that claim to have the RFID chip often don't reset the time light.
Anything has to be better than my last Whirlpool.

When we built our retirement home we had an RO installed which runs to both the fridge and the under counter ice machine. The appliances were all KitchenAid. When the fridge said it was time to replace the filter I discovered it's design was such that by simply removing the filter put it in bypass mode. At least we don't have to shell out $50 or more a year. Pure luck though, didn't know about the bypass until it came up.

"new appliances" seem to be made as disposable. Mostly. Our house came with full GE everything about 5 years old. Dishwasher broke first, then the cloths washer.

Speed Queens washer and drier are fantastic. Bosch dishwashers seem to go the distance, left on in our old house that was 11 years old. Put on in here when the GE died. I hate it but feel like if you buy MOR stuff, its gonna get replaced sooner than you like. I am now looking at only high end, because even if there is an issue it can be fixed.

I came across this just last week on with my ex-wife's fridge. You can find a ton of "non-chipped" filters for $10 on Ebay, but they won't work unless you peel the label off the chipped one, and stick it over the sensor at the back of mount. Doing this will save you money, but it won't reset the warning light on the front of the fridge. I agree, it's a total scam by GE. :emoji_rage:
