These Ge refrigerators water filters have a chip on them so you have to get from them and there are $$. I was able to get the label off last one and use on regular filter but not so lucky this time. I ordered a filter and now without cold water and ice until it gets here. I called Ge when I did last filter and was suppose to send bypass but never did. Just got done with chat and suppose to send one. We will see. If I can bypass will buy an external filter. I seem to be having a time lately with special made products!

Yeah, seems dishonest. Companies add extra tech, which doesn't add anything to the product except eliminate competition on stupid disposable parts. Then they are incentivized to make those parts need turn over more frequently.

Major scam.

Our GE will take non GE filters, but they didnt really work well. little pieces of plastic would come out in the water.

At my old house we have an external filter under the sink that fed the ice maker (didnt have the water dispenser on the refer) loved the external one.

Right-to-repair is big issue for consumer advocate groups versus manufacturers of everything from cell phones to farm vehicles. Once a company is big enough to intimidate - or collaborate with - any would-be competition, growing corporate service departments is way easier and more lucrative than actual innovation and problem-solving.

Similarly, as more products become tech-enabled and internet-connected, companies are also looking to make more products into subscription services. Pay a monthly fee, or else the expensive thing you "bought" gets bricked. But they swear it's totally not extortion! Lesson learned from the medical (treatments-not-cures) industry.

At least we can still build our own stick-burners...

Great. Just bought a GE yesterday.

Eight people coming over for dinner Friday and the damn refrigerator chooses to die. Won’t be delivered until next week. Eight frikin years old. The garage refer is over twenty five and going strong.

There is a reason old guys are grumpy.

Yep, My neighbor was just telling me that he had the same issue... I will let him know he should reach out to GE. His biggest complaint is that they have R.O. hooked up and the filter is still required and needs to be "changed" when GE says it has had "XX Gallons" run through it... seems a bit shady...

Yeah Brian it took me 3 calls to GE to get the bypass plug. pulled that sticker off and placed on the back wall behind the filter and I can use the non rfid filters now,

Have him get the free bypass plug from GE, that is what is meant for, when using an external water treatment system.

FWIW. the GE filters go by date, not volume. (XWFEmodel)
I've just given in to the fact that its going to be $50 each to replace.
My GE was completely replaced with new by GE under warranty (long story.
our city water is very drinkable, but the ice maker slows way down when the filter gets funky.
FWIW the service guy from Bodewell (GE operated) told me he could get them much cheaper but it was a hassle for me. Also the generics that claim to have the RFID chip often don't reset the time light.
Anything has to be better than my last Whirlpool.

When we built our retirement home we had an RO installed which runs to both the fridge and the under counter ice machine. The appliances were all KitchenAid. When the fridge said it was time to replace the filter I discovered it's design was such that by simply removing the filter put it in bypass mode. At least we don't have to shell out $50 or more a year. Pure luck though, didn't know about the bypass until it came up.

"new appliances" seem to be made as disposable. Mostly. Our house came with full GE everything about 5 years old. Dishwasher broke first, then the cloths washer.

Speed Queens washer and drier are fantastic. Bosch dishwashers seem to go the distance, left on in our old house that was 11 years old. Put on in here when the GE died. I hate it but feel like if you buy MOR stuff, its gonna get replaced sooner than you like. I am now looking at only high end, because even if there is an issue it can be fixed.

I came across this just last week on with my ex-wife's fridge. You can find a ton of "non-chipped" filters for $10 on Ebay, but they won't work unless you peel the label off the chipped one, and stick it over the sensor at the back of mount. Doing this will save you money, but it won't reset the warning light on the front of the fridge. I agree, it's a total scam by GE. :emoji_rage:

It’s lame for sure. Mine are not chipped but $50 each and the flow is not great. Might get the bypass and add a Woder filter under the sink. They last a year and then I can add a faucet to the sink

I'm set up with RO as well... And my fridge also goes into bypass by simply removing the filter ...

The ge bypass filter has a volume limit also unless they changed something since November of 23. It wont do anything to peel a label off as it has a serial number , No way would I knowingly buy a unit like that. the good news is most of the water filters today will catch more contaminations than ever before, Thats why the flow slows down before any time limit is hit, the filter doesn't slow the water down because of a time limit, when the time limit is hit it shuts the water off,

I kept our 15 YO LG when we rebuilt our kitchen. There is a guy on YouTube that works on fixing fridges. He goes all out on all brands. He talks about all these things but also about how crappy the last generation of fridges are made.

The worst are the bottom freezers and fridge on top. The Ice makers fail regularly because they do not belong in the fridge part. Side by sides are best from him.

The only thing with non chip filters is remembering when to change them on time.

Oh I found it. He has many videos.

Bens Appliances and Junk

This is one of his older videos but is a fun watch.

Fortunately I don't have to worry about the chipped filter (yet) but the filters for my Whirlpool fridge are about $50. So, I finally decide that's too expensive and I order a much cheaper brand and installed. First it was dirty ice, then the ice maker stopped working (damaged from filter debris) and cost over $400 to repair/replace. I went back to the $50 filters and no issues. Sometimes we must choose the pain we wish to endure..........

Kind of like the Kurig coffee machines were in the early days.

What model on the washer did you get? I am on my 3rd since 1997 here and this one is banging and shaking (whirlpool) even though I replaced the shocks. It might be the plastic hub is cracked, I have the part (metal) but can't break the tub free. I have tried all the youtube tricks and it is still stuck.

High end doesn't always guarantee low maintenance. My friend bought a Sub-Zero fridge and a Viking range, and has had numerous problems with them both.
