Good afternoon all,  I am looking for a 2 shelf build and looking for a lower grate that is preferable cast iron or  stainless steel with removable insert so I can easily remove firebox or add charcoal without having to remove the bottom rack.  It seems like will be a pain to jiggle around upper screws to remove whole rack.

Any suggestions?  Char broil had one but is now discontinued.

Thanks in advance all

Add more fuel than you think you need so adding later is a moot point.....

Thank you Dave for reply and advice. I am also looking at access to heat deflector through " hatch solution". Any suggestions?

Some members have used a perforated pizza pan...   I've seen them at W-M...  Below is one from AMAZON...  It is aluminum...   I would NOT get an aluminum pan..  get one that is steel..    OR you can get a solid steel pan, no holes...  Just make sure there is ~2" clearance around the pan..  You don't want heat trapped under the pan..  You want the air flow and smoke flow pretty much unobstructed....

Thanks Dave, what would be minimum clearance from top of firebox to meat for bottom rack? Can I get away with 10 inches, if I use heat shield?

Any distance is fine...   Closer is hotter...   The heat shield should provide a more uniform heat throughout the smoker...  ALTHOUGH, some folks have noted the top rack is the hottest ...

..  I guess it depends on the amount of meat, etc...

Weber has a sear grate with a removable cast iron insert.

This is the grate with its regular insert.

Thank you Dave and Kam for your expertise!   Kam that is some build!!
