I know what you mean!  People here in Al do the same thing.  I grew up in Western, NY, my brother still lives there.  He has a name for what happens here in the South when the weather says snow.  Snowmageddon!

We do it here in Florida a few times a year with hurricane warnings. You get the essentials at the beginning of summer, then just beer & snacks when there is a warning. If the electric goes out long enough to thaw the stuff in the freezer we just fire up the grill & smoker and cook it all for a neighborhood party.
