Never owned one, and am confused as to which are good and which are less than good.

That's a 2nd gen mes.     A lot of problems with them.

With that being said a lot of people use them.

The 1st gen has the control panel on  the top back of the unit.

1st gen are the better ones.

I own the Masterbuilt electric digital 30-inch electric smoker, Gen 1, without the window and I've greatly enjoyed it. It was less expensive and I love it. It's also available with a window in both 30 inch and 40 inch models. There's also a brand new model with Bluetooth enabled which might be worth looking at. Might be a bit pricey.
