Many areas have varying traditions on some holidays.

Here in my area of Maryland its Black Eye Peas

As Rick SFLsmkr1 in another post shows Pa to be sauerkraut and pork

My Italian Aunt was always Pickle Herring.

So what's yours?

Can't say we have a typical tradition on new years. For several years if my beer buddy (best friend from college) came it was playing cards on new years eve, then the 1st one up cracked open a beer in the others face and it was time to get up and have a beer! That's been a few years ago, now it's coffee and smokes till bloody Mary time and usually bacon and scrambled eggs for brunch.
Olaf, if you would share how to make lefse sure would appreciate it. Maybe do a post on it...sounds really good!

Here's mine with some sugar cured ham chips.

Make and eat a lot of lefse up in ND and parts of MN and WI

Sounds like someone is Norwegian. We had that a lot when I was really young. Not so much in the last 50 years.

I've had some form of Herring, sardines or anchovies every Christmas and New Years since I can remember. Ok I'll admit it I eat those little fishies throughout the year, but I make sure I have them at this time of year.

Yea I can go for sardines in mustard sauce or hot sauce.

I enjoy them any way I can get them.

I had some smoked herring in Nova Scotia when I was in my teens and it was great. Unfortunately herring isn't readily available here so I've had to substitute with smelt in the winter months, and even smelt is getting harder to find. It's not as good, but its still tasty.

We've been doing our own New Year's Day tradition for the last 20 + years or so. Prime Rib with Mashed Taters, 1 veggie and a Bread. Very simple. The 1 time we didn't have this for New Year's over the last 20 years, we had a bad year both personally and in business. Fool me once, right? Stay Safe everyone and Happy New Year!
