If you're talking wood chunks, Walmart is probably your best bet price wise. Home Depot and Lowes also have chunks stocked year-round.

If you're talking cords of wood, forget about hickory. You won't find it here in California. Oak and fruit-woods are generally available.

You asked the right guy. Me!!!

Okay of course Home Depot you can get some wood chunks and chips. They have a nice selection but if you want more "exotic" types of wood choices I have some suggestions. I don't know where you are in So Cal but you do a Google search for wood sources in So Cal near you. I go to two places that I can suggest.

One in Santa Ana called The Wood Shed. They have a good selection and they sell manageable sized pieces of wood. They have good prices and good customer service -

Glatts Firewood in Pasadena. They were bought out by a tree cutting service so you can go to the original Glatts or the tree cutting service lot a few miles away. They prices were pretty good when Glatts was an independent and not sure how the prices have changed since the tree cutting service purchased Glatts. I think it's still good though -

Here is one I have not purchased from but did stop by and checked it out. They have a nice selection. It's in Santa Monica and called Whitts. Not sure how the prices are since I didn't buy from them but just checked it out -

You can try saw mills. Many have slab wood which is the scraps from lumber making. Trees will be 8.5' to 9.5' going into the mill and the first scarf and ends of the boards cutting to 8' are the slab wood.

If you can find one that can identify certain woods or let you pick through them. You might have to be able to identify the wood by grain or the bark. Also, hit up any orchards, they re always loosing/replacing trees.
