That's what we call it around here. No Rain, just watching the sky light up like a Christmas tree, thunder & lightning too, but nothing hitting the ground. Haven't seen this in at least five years. It's great fun to watch.
Don't ruin it. Tired of tech stuff. Always called it heat lightnin'. Haven't seen it in a while though.
The old folks used to call it heat lightning, Really no such thing, What you are seeing is called cloud to cloud lightning (CTC) vs the normal lightning we see which is cloud to ground lightning (CTG).
A really strong CTC storm is what puts on the fantastic light shows we see at night during the summer.
Yeah, we always called it heat lightning too. Saw it all the time when I was a kid, but haven't seen it in years lately.

When I was growing up we used to call it heat lighting also, because it always happened on hot summer nights...usually followed by violent thunderstorms a few hours later.

They're called " Sprites ". I once watched a a single huge high rising Cumulominbus cloud, Dad called them Thunderheads, from several miles away, in an otherwise clear sky, a short time after sundown. There were Sprites, CTG Lightning and spectacular Lightning within the cloud. Best show ever!...JJ
How about the violet-colored lightning that goes up out of a cloud and branches out and up like a hand extending its fingers? I've only seen that twice. Once was the storm that caused the Shadyside flood in 1990 - the storm happened to pass by about 20 miles to the south, so I could see it from a side view.
