I have these two pork loins that were given to me last summer, just not sure exactly when. They seem to be well wrapped, no visible freezer burn but I have no idea how old they really are. I want to make Canadian bacon out of them. Any thoughts?

I concur! I’ve got them thawing now, going to use pops brine and inject since they are so thick. We shall see, thanks for the input everyone!

Well, unfortunately, once thawed it just didn’t pass the smell test. My better half said it smelled “old”, and I trust her sniffer better than mine. Not much I hate more than throwing out wasted food, but into the trash it went.

Regardless thanks again to all for the input and encouragement!

But wait....
Can it be dog food?

Well, I guess it could have. I don’t have dogs but my folks do. I was boning them out (they weren’t pork loins as it turns out they were chops) when the decision was made. We were getting ready for work and taking out the trash. I guess I should’ve thought that through some more....

It's OK. I just try and find alternates sometimes.
My little buddy in my avatar sometimes doubles as my taste tester.
He wouldn't even look back up from his rib when we tested the 3.2.1. rib method.

My 13 pound Chihuahua.
He's not fat, he's 'fluffy'...

(He rescued me one evening at work. Once he settled in, he's been my shadow for 14 years now. Toothless, so I cook for him daily.)

To be fair, according to the AKC (American kennel club), it’s not recommended for dogs to eat raw, or cooked pork.

So, I’m trying to feel a little better about this in case you couldn’t tell. Lol.

So based on that theory, it would be safe to eat raw pork after it has been frozen?

Not for me. I'd boil it at least.
Raw meat has me shampooing a dogs Butt.... :p:( Yukkie!
Followed by disinfecting everything...

73saint, for a dog, Yes! Their digestive tract works differently that ours.
That's why a dog can dig up a piece of chicken days later, loaded with salmonella, eat it and not get sick.
A fact: there is a segment of society that eats raw meat, chicken included.
in France, raw meat is considered a delicacy. You've heard of Steak Tartar?
Pork is no difference except for the parasites, and if treated correctly they are not a threat.

Sonny, cooked meat loses many of its nutrients for dogs.

Dogs have adapted to raw meat. How many wolves do you know cook their meat?

Shelf life on frozen meat/pork if it is fatty 6 months. If vacuum pack could last longer. Be careful about giving pork to dogs some breed such as spaniels have a food intolerence for pork. My dog was a mix Mother was a cock a poo and she got mixed up with a basset hound ( great dog) used to get extremely sick if she for any pork products and required a trip to the vet.
