A friend of mine bought a knife from some bargain store and discovered why it was there.  The edge was as blunt as a cheap butter knife.  Since I make knives now and then, he figured I could sharpen it for him.

I had to make an edge on my belt grinder before I could begin to sharpen.  It was so dull that you couldn't cut yourself with it if you tried to.  The video below shows the end result...

He told me today that the knife now makes his fingers worry...

Not many things more dangerous than a dull knife. No controll with dull knife, too much pressure and bad things happen. They don't cut they tear rip and bruise. A cut from a sharp knife heals much faster and don't hurt near as much. The sharper the better.

As long as the owner of this properly sharp knife  is taught and uses proper knife skills ,his fingers don't need to worry.

My kitchen knives are that sharp. almost 2 years ago i was chopping an onion and wife walked in the kitchen and said something to me. i took my eyes (and mind) off what i was doing and shaved the tip of my ring finger off.  still a nice scar and tender to this day. Bet i don't do it again.

I agree, a sharp knife is actually less dangerous than a dull one. I always keep my knives very sharp with a set of Japanese water stones.Tell you friend to get a cut proof glove for his left hand and he wont have to be afraid of the knife. I always try and use a glove, if I am going to be doing a lot of cutting, it's just safer.

Got a call tonight from the gent I sharpened for.... He said the onions and garlic he was mincing started to slice and mince before the blade hit them.

He's happy and has 4 more for me to sharpen next week.
