I ordered some sheep casings from Sausage Maker that took 10 days to get here.  I have a batch of sausage ready and got out these new casings (sheep) that I paid a premium for only to find they are full of holes!  BIG holes and look more like sprinklers than casing.  This is what they look like on the 3 strands I tried to flush ... holes about every 6-10"'s

Anyone else have casings issues with Sausage Maker or am I just lucky?  Who is a reputable supplier for these?

rexlan, morning.....  WOW, that's something.....  Was it the home pak natural sheep for $12.99 that is giving you the trouble ??

Dave

NO ... I bought a full hank of them ... junk.  24-26mm

That's not good news....  Premium casings with holes....  Salvage what you can....  maybe use short sections or something....  to cut your losses and in the meantime, someone will come along and recommend a different supplier for the next order....

Maybe all the old timers retired from the "casing line" and these young "know it all" replacements are filling the orders....  Dave

I wouldn't mess with them further.
Resalt them and pack them back into the container.
Call the Sausage Maker.
They're not as they should be so you deserve all your money back.

Over the years, I've had issues with almost any casing supplier I've done business with, at one time or another.

I sent Sausage Maker a pretty blunt email about these and one previous order I let go and just threw out.

I am pleased to report, however, that Jean at Sausage Maker issued me a full refund just now and handled the problem promptly to my satisfaction.  Accordingly, I feel obligated to make that know as well as the original problem.

I also ordered a hank of hog casings but have not "investigated" them yet ....  The sheep's are so perforated that they are unusable.  I have tossed them and will look for another supplier.

How about Syracuse Casing?

Now that's funny.....

Hey rex. Sorry to hear about your casing problem... That stinks when you have meat ready to stuff... I use Butcher and packer and have always gotten high quality casings with no problems

Got a new order in with Butcher and Packer for casings ... hope they are good.

Are all sheep casings a pain to work with or is it something you just need to get good at??

Loading sheep casings go hand in hand with cussing.......especially the 22-24 mm or smaller

they are generally capable of making a preacher cuss. i do have a way that works well for me. different strokes for different folks, don't mean you'll have the sucess i do.  after clampin stuffer onto table and filling bucket, i always set a cookie pan under the stuffer tube to catch all the stuffed sausage. after soakin/flushing my casings, i put 1/2-1 cup of water into the cookie sheet and put the casing in the cookie pan. crank the stuffer down till the meat JUST BEGINS to come out the tube. opening the end of the casing is the bugger, after that, i slip it right up onto the stuffer tube.

They have a good rep.  I guess even they could get a bad batch.

Having said that?  Sheep casings are very delicate.

Good luck and good smoking.

Why does it seem that all the casings available at cabelas and sportsmans warehouse no matter the brand are processed in china. Whats up with that?

AI've gottnother option that you might have available is you local butcher if they make their own wieners.  I've gotten casings from  2 now the first one had to order some for me and the second has them on hand and said to just call them and come and pick up a hank.  I figure they make this for a living, they should know who the best suplier is.  Also have been comparably priced with no shipping expense.

Not sure if anyone answered your question, but I have ordered from Syracuse (http://www.makincasing.com) several times and have never had a problem, including their sheep casings.  I always get the pre-flushed and tubed ones which makes it easier to get on the stuffer tubes.  Never had any holes in any of them.
