That one has been debated a long time. The list says not to smoke with Cedar...Tell that one to the Salmon folks. There are recipe for all kinds of stuff cooked with or lightly smoke with Pine Needles and twigs. Below is some reading then decide for yourself...JJ
We have used sassafras for years. We don't use it straight, we mix it with apple and have smoked turkey, jerky, cheese, chicken & fish. All turned out amazing & haven't used anything else since. Why mess with perfection, lol.

Don't think it would be good however that is where Root Beer started. My dad years ago when I was a little kid made us Sassafras tea
