Rust

I was on leave and TDY for 2 months and when i got back on island my drum that i burned out and was ready to build a new drum smoker was all rusted on outside and in. Should i just do another  burn? And then sand the inside and out?

After i burned and wire brushed my drum it rained and it rusted. I just took the wire brush to it again and painted the outside for rust protection. Then i sprayed veggie oil on the inside and seasoned it. Its good to go now.

Hello brg.  How ya doin?  What a bummer.  Wish I had known I would have warned ya.  Once you heat metal by burning or welding, it will rust in a heart-beat ( as you discovered the hard way ).  A coat of veggie oil would have saved you a bunch of work.  preston897 has pretty much got ya covered.  Another burn shouldn't be necessary but I'm afraid the only option now is to wire brush the whole thing inside and out.  Paint the outside as preston mentioned and then do your seasoning smoke with the veggie oil.  Sorry you learned this the hard way.  Post some picts of the build.  Good luck.  Keep Smokin!

Ok thanks guys sounds like ill just wire brush the inside thats gonna suck lol. I never did my season yet because on this drum i have no way to fit a lid on yet and to get something fabricated was like 150$ i wish there was an easier way.

There is always a way to improvise country boy style try the lid on a big garbage can.  Or believe it or not a scrap sheet of tin or wood.  Wood will last for a long time long as ya temp stayes below 250,  My BF has a smoke house made of plywood and scraps that has lasted years and had literally thousands of lbs of meat through it.

The thing is held together with bungie cords, furniture clamps and screen door latches.  The folding chair is there to help keep the door closed.  Gas fired with the burner from an ole hot water heater it cost almost nothing and has been priceless

Hello brg.  Cappy has ya covered.  Shame on you.  Has the military changed that much since I was in?  ADAPT!  IMPROVISE!  OVERCOME!  ACHIEVE THE OBJECTIVE NO MATTER THE COST!  Yes I was in AFTER 1945 ( not THAT old ).  

  Just teasing.  I know it's a raw deal but afraid the wire brush is the only solution.  Good luck.  Keep Smokin!

Hello.  Forgot.  No galvanise tin.  As a lid it MIGHT be no problem but I would not risk it.

Haha thanks everyone for the suggestions really appreciate it. Ill get to it this weekend probably. i still have my other drum smoker if i want to smoke something. just wanted to build a new and improved smoker.
