I've been working away on mods to my RT340 Trailblazer. It has replaced my old Genesis and Masterbuilt bullet smoker. I loved it 'out-of-the-box', but I'm never happy until I've figured out a few improvements. Here's the list of mods to date:
  1. Camp Chef sear box. I wanted to be able to do a quick sear on sous vide steaks, or just grill a couple salmon burgers. The sear box gets up to temperature really fast and is a perfect complement to the capabilities of the RT340.
  2. Thermal blanket. The RT340 struggled a bit and went through a lot of pellets any time it's below zero (and that's been more often than we'd like of late). The cover is made from a carbon fiber welding blanket and a piece of cotton fabric for an outer shell.
  3. Folding shelf. I discovered that stainless steel replacement grates for the Genesis Series E are just the right size to give me a folding shelf AND an extra internal grate. The folding shelf is made from a Genesis grate, a pair of stainless shelf brackets, and a couple of oak spacers to bring it to the right height.
  4. Extra internal grate. The second Genesis grate sits on supports 3 1/2" above the main grate, and gives me room for another layer of chicken parts or whatever when I'm smoking.

Next up - bigger tires. It's longer, wider, and heavier than it was originally.

Thanks. I feel like the Trailblazer is a great smoker / grill. These mods were pretty easy and make it perfect for my needs. Just did three pork butts yesterday, and will do a whole batch of chicken parts tomorrow. The front work shelf is really nice, and much more useful than the side work surface on my Genesis. The chicken parts will be the first test of the second internal grate.

One of my dinner guests from a couple months ago bought a Trailblazer after seeing mine in action, though he hasn't done the mods (yet).
