I will be heading to Starkville Ms to tour the Mississippi state campus with my son this Thursday and Friday. We will be going from NE Alabama down through Birmingham and Tuscaloosa on to Starkville.

What food joints should we try to hit on our path? Doesn't have to be smoked meat, all recommendations welcome! Thanks in advance

I grew up in tupelo just north of Starkville. I'm a huge Mississippi state bulldog fan. We go to a couple games a season in Starkville. Go to Oby's for sure for some pretty good Cajun food. The bbq joints around there are endless. Just pick one. Starkville has a Harveys which is a second location from the original in tupelo. Great food, steaks and such.......Hail State!

I was hoping to get close to a Doe's eat place but it looks like those are out of the area we will be in. I have wanted one of their steaks since I saw them on a food channel program years ago.

Yeah you can't go wrong with Doe's. Been years for me but you can't find many better steaks in the US imo

If you are in Memphis, check out the Germantown Commissary. That is likely my most fav in that part of the country. I married into a fam from the Memphis area and have sampled many. There are a lot and some have been there for decades, but that doesn’t make them the best. Just sayin.

Ringer Ringer ate at the (I think) original Does in Greenville, MS years ago. Yeah, those steaks are great! Looks at Jake has you on the right track in Starksville.

I would recommend that you alter your route and go through Decatur Alabama and stop at Big Bob Gibson bbq. If you get toward Tupelo don’t miss CHOP, Clays House of Pork. They have a phenomenal beef brisket and I’m normally not impressed with Brisket. Tuscaloosa area: Archibald and Woodrow’s or the original Dreamland location.

Stop 1. Nicks original filet house in tuscaloosa. I recommend you not stop here. The locals laid back attitude and low steak prices drew me in but those prices were several years old. Waited an hour for a table, waiter never turned our order in waited another 1.5 hrs for unseasoned flat top griddle steak that was not the filet we ordered and was akin to work boot soles. They did realize their error and knocked $16 off the bill. Trust me, not worth your time.

Stop 2. Bulldog burger company in Starkville. This was my son's pick. Excellent food and service, I would highly recommend this to anyone.

Now for the ride home later tonight...

Update: on the ride home we stopped in Birmingham. We are big fans of Eastern NC whole hog bbq. Rodney Scott's fits the bill. Great whole hog and I'll be going back sometime.
