Hi from Uk
I’m at the beginning of a smoker build, and wondered if anyone could give me some help with the sizing and design of the smoker.
The cook chambers going to made from an old LPG tank (370gallons) I’m going to insulate the firer box hopefully 6mm steel all round for that , maybe 10mm on the internal box for heat retention., this is where I need your help , thickness of the door ,as I herd 6mm can warp, also the thickness of the plate in the cook chamber that runs under the cooking racks is thicker better or not . I’m thinking 6mm or is 10mm better.

many thanks
Mark

6mm thickness is just about 1/4". That is pretty much the standard in the US. Some go a bit thicker. If you are going to insulate I'd use the 6mm it'll be a lot easier to work with. I used 5/16" ( about 8mm) for my uninsulated firebox because it was readily available at the scrap yard. Thicker steel means longer warm up / cool down times.

Here is a link to a build calculator.

I hope this helps.

What are your thoughts on f/b shape . Square or round .

Its really up to you. I chose a square firebox because I felt confident that I could build one and scrap plate was readily available.

Thanks RG , square works better for me , it’s just I herd a round fire box was better. How and why I’m not sure . Also do you think 6mm for the inner box is enough or should I step it up to 10mm.

The smokers coming along nicely, hopefully it won’t be to long before it’s finished.

Another bit done, hopefully the opening between the f/b & c/c is big enough 20” wide x 8” high

Cooking racks and counter weight now done
