Sacrificial Anode Tree
I’m sure many of you know what a “Sacrificial Anode” is, when it comes to Outboard Motors, Hot Water Heaters, etc, etc.
Well the tree below is quite similar:
I planted this line of Leyland Cypress trees 3 years ago, I had one extra, so I planted it on the end, figuring if one would die, I could move that end tree to the place where the one that died had been. Then the first Fall that end tree closest to the thickest part of the woods got hammered by a Buck. The one next to it got hit too, but only slightly, so I left the end tree there to do the job of a Sacrificial Anode. The second year the end tree got rubbed even harder, but the others were untouched. Now just last month that end tree got hit again, but the others are still untouched. Mrs Bear looked at me funny when I told her two years ago that I was leaving that ugly tree there to protect the others, but now she understands. If I would have ripped that one out, those two 8 pointers I’ve been seeing this year would be destroying the next one in the row!!!
Take a look below,
Bear
Here’s what that tree looks like now, after 3 years of Whitetail Buck Abuse:

Here it is doing it’s job, protecting the other trees from those nasty Buck.
Notice the big trees at the far end of this line going to the left at a 90 degree angle. Those are the same kind of trees, but I planted them 10 years ago.

Returning to the Scene of the Crime
OK—I showed you guys the way a Buck wrecked one of my trees the pictures above.
Well, my Son put a Game camera out there, and we caught the culprit returning to the scene of the crime.
A decent size 10 pointer, but not huge as 10 pointers go.
We haven’t seen him during the day yet, but if my Son sees him, he’s done!!!
The Doe was just checking the camera out during the day.
The captions on the pics show you what times they were there & what days.

This must be the culprit—A 10 Pointer:

Another Angle———Yup—It was him!! He wrecked my tree!!!
