The wife and I are going to do a last minute trip to KY, We're staying between Louisville and Lexington. Planning on getting there on Saturday and leaving on Tuesday. Saturday we're going to the horse races. I'd like to hit somewhere to get some good bourbon. Not sure we'll have enough time to do many tours. Any idea where to go to get the best bourbon experience?

You didn't tell us where you are actually staying or where the horse races are but there are at least a dozen distilleries or "bourbon experiences" within 30 miles of Shelbyville.

A web search also shows several "Bourbon tours" or companies operating in the area. Looks like you pay them to guide you and drive. I wouldn't mind doing something like that, that would drop me back at the hotel where hopefully there is a decent restaurant within walking distance. That way I could taste all day (presumably) and not have to drive. My guess is the cops around there are acutely enforcing DUI...bieng a bourbon hub and all.

I've never been there. Only time I've crossed the Kentucky state line is when visiting an ex father in law years ago stationed at Ft. Campbell. I'd love to go to bourbon country, I love the stuff, but I'd need another reason other than bourbon to drive the 8 hours and we're not in to horses. Doesn't look like much else there than caves, parks, museums and a zoo. We have distilleries in VA now, along with some really good wineries and breweries. We have our own touristy and tasting road trips nearby. Leaves will be turning soon...unfortunately its hard to enjoy those tours even though they are less than an hour away because they are all so packed with people this time of year (from out of the area). They are madhouses.

Have a great trip!

Thanks chef k-dude chef k-dude good idea on the transportation, a quick google and there are a few that will pick up and drop off at a hotel. I'll have to take advantage of that

It is on my list. Here is a good thread that may have some info:

SO MANY distilleries. If you are not really into the nuts and bolts of a distillery but just want some fantastic bourbon, Whiskey Thief is a must. Great venue and great high proof bourbon. Makers Mark has a great tour and Buffalo Trace is also excellent. Some distilleries require a reservation for a tour/tasting, so I'd call first. I love that area. You'll have a great time !
