A friend and I have been planning this hog hunting trip for almost a year, and today, it begins. I'm typing this as he is on an airplane coming in from Forks, Washington.

Just to tease him a bit, I sent these pics to him this morning, they were taken a few days ago on the scouting trip to the field we will be hunting tomorrow night.

I took off at noon today so I could get supper started. Full spares are on the menu!

Since ribs are on the menu, we gotta have some beans too! I started soaking the beans last night, and today I added onions, garlic, salt pork, bay leaf and a little trick I do...

I don't trim my ribs heavily, but I do take off some of the loose flaps and then coat them in the rub. They then go into the smoker until I get a decent bark. They then get chopped up and into the beans they go!

More pics tonight, and over the next several days!

Amazing. I thought you have to hunt the hog before you can eat its ribs. Once again, it turns out I am learning something every day.:-)

Now I am making plans for going hunting in the weekend. Let's see if I get the eat ribs before that.

Looking forward to post-hunt pics Cranky.

Gonna be eating good, Charlie. I'll be watching

We don't have many wild pigs here in Southern Missouri. There are supposedly a few around but I've never seen any on any conservation ground.

So my question is; what is your gun of choice to hunt these critters?

If I went I'd have to use either my .270 or a shotgun with deer slugs.

First, Geezer, thank your lucky stars you're not overrun with them, but the bad news?  They're coming in all likelihood.   Second, what to use?  Simple answer is all you can muster--400 lb. Russian boar will kill you as soon as look at you.  I'll let Charlie fill you in with details, as it's his thread, but there's not really much firepower that's too big for these damn things.  My $0.02.

Looks like a good time will be had. And the food aint to shabby either.

Yeah, I know the conservation dept. is concerned with the issue. Our current regulation on wild hogs is to shoot on sight, year round.

A few years ago there were reports of hogs being in the Fort Leonard Wood area. In fact I had thought about dragging the travel trailer down there and scouting around on the public grounds. But then a couple of sources said they were few and far between, so I never bothered. I should look around on the different Missouri hunting forums and see what guys are saying these days about them.

On a side note I know mountain lions and even black bears are slowly re-establishing themselves, so no reason why pigs couldn't.

Looks really good Cranky, Good luck on your trip, Hope you and your buddy fare well.... That one is a bucket list one for sure..... Keep us posted...

Phone update. I'll post more detailed replies when I get to a PC tomorrow.

This morning he was introduced to authentic Mexican food before we left town. Juevos con chorizo and barbacoa tacos.

On the way to the hunting place we hit a junk store. Sausage stuffer heaven! I may stop on the way home.

Headed out to the field. Hope to have "pork" pics late tonight or in the morning!
