I am heading to Richmond, VA soon for my dad's 60th birthday bbq bash. We plan to smoke some pulled pork and ribs in his soon to be new smoker.

What are some good places to check for decent pork butts around the northern side of Richmond?

Thanks!

Sams club and costco come to mind.

Well hey have a great trip I lived there 5 years before moving here to MO. Check out any Food Lion in the area. All the ones in the Bon Air area carried them and that's where I'd get mine. I wouldn't worry too much about it cause that's prime pork country and you're gonna find it everywhere!

If you are planning on bringing back some country cured hams or picnics, check out Adam's Country Store in Waverly. Just take 460 South and East towards Virginia Beach, Waverly is about 10 miles outside Richmond. They cure their own and are fantastic. I get them through the mail over here to MO. 9243 General Mahone Hwy (that's 460) Waverly, VA 23890. It's on the left heading south, and it's a little shack standing by itself. Looks like a 1930's gas station.

Thanks for the links and advice. I should have mentioned I Googled butchers in the area already, I was hoping to get some feedback on where the cheaper prices lay. A couple butchers emailed me back quoting prices from 1.99 to 2.29 a lb, which is a bit more than what I am used to paying up here in MI.

We also don't have a Sam's Club or Costco membership. :-(

I live in Richmond, and any good grocery store is going to carry both butts and ribs. Best meat in town is @ Kroger IMHO, but best butcher in a grocery store is a local chain called Ukrop's. They will be able to give you more of a custom cut than Krogers, but you pay for it. The one thing that you can't get in our grocery stores is beef brisket, and if you can it's crazy priced @ $4+ per pound.

I ended up getting them at Sam's Club, they were decently priced and came out nice. I went to Ukrops over on Three Chopt rd, and it just pissed me off trying to shop there LOL. They don't even have a cookie aisle, which really pissed off the wife.

Well there ya go! The best Ukrops to go to is in Careytown. Although it's full of puppyyuppies (do they still call them that?) and froufrou's it has the best service and choices of them all.
