I know this has been discussed before, but we have a few new members on board now who may not be aware of this issue. I stumbled across this youtube video by accident while searching for something totally unrelated. I don't own a pooper, but I would seriously think twice before leaving one unattended or doing an over-nighter.

You can do the same thing with an electric. Remember, you can modify a car to run on wood smoke, so when you have that much white, thick stuff around, if there’s an ignition source and a marginally stochiometric mixture, it’s gonna sneeze.

The upside with the pellet grill as opposed to an electric, is that it probably would have done just fine after it poofed and got rid of the extra fuel because the door opened and closed on its own. On a MES, it will often pop the latch open, (or worse, I’ve talked to guys that blew the glass out of their doors) which would obviously put a cramp in a guy’s cook.

I just bought a pellet smoker/grill. What should I look for to keep this from happening. I’m a newbie.

this guy knew it was going to happen and that's why he was filming, said he had been running it for 2 hrs at 250 , don't know what happened but the lid always has to be open to start it up, then when the flame is established shut the lid.

A lot of people don't realize that smoke is a fuel and is flammable. When smoke ends up exploding like that, it is typically one of two events. Either a flashover, where the temperature is so hot (typically around 1000*F) that the smoke (as well as other contents) simultaneously ignites; or a backdraft occurs, which happened here. The smoke basically snuffs out the fire which is then starving for oxygen. Once oxygen is reintroduced, the fire now has what it needs to burn and simultaneously ignites the smoke.

From reading your post I was expecting something catastrophic, but that looked pretty harmless. I mean, it's not idea, and you certainly don't want that to happen when you cook, but I don't see any reason not to cook overnight based on that video.

Jonok, I wasn't putting poopers down by any means. I was just trying to inform new users that this is a possibility. I'm fully aware similar instances can happen with electrics and gasses. However, I didn't by chance run across a video showing it. Wood smoke powered car - please share a video of this. I'm more then interested.

jmvogt, 0x0 has your question covered.

ponz, catastrophic no, to me worrisome yes. Also depending where your smoker is located. The end results could have been worse. Again not trying to persuade anybody here. I just want to make them aware.

here’s a how-to video about making a wood-fired pickup:

Jonok, it looks interesting, but when I click on the video it say "Video Unavailable".
