I have a few pecan trees in my yard a big ole limb has fallen this weekend I was thinking about using it for my smoke but have no idea how long it should dry out I'll have to shave it cuz I use an electric smoker with a small smoke box ,any ideas or advise would be awesome

Coupla' years ago, a friend gave me some limbs pruned from Apple trees. I cut the limbs into thin slices with a Skil saw and then split those slices into small pieces with a hatchet.

Just a thought...

Drying time depends on how big you cut the pieces, humidity in your area, etc. cut to the size you'll use sticker stack it and keep it somewhere with low humidity and good air flow. As for time could take several months or up to a year or more.

Thanx y'all that's how I looked at it its free I haven't tried pecan yet but seems to be a popular choice, don't have a skill saw but do have a big ole ax

Great! Plus I get to take my frustrations out on a limb after picking nuts outta the yard we had a sh.. load this year

We cracked and shelled 40# this year for my wife's grandmother. She sold almost 600# of them! Since she has the pecan orchard (?) I tend to get a lot of limbs from her place.

Let us know what you think of it.

For not much you can get a hatchet like us boys had years ago. Once the big axe gets it into smaller pieces then the hatchet will split them. Also for not much you can get a small bow saw and then the short logs split very easily with the ax or hatchet. As to how long for it to dry, if left as an uncut 2" dia. limb then it will take maybe 3 months in TN. If you cut it up so it is in 12" logs then maybe 2 months. All assumes not stored in a damp dark place with no air flow.
