Pea gravel?

Just wanted to get some feedback from ones more in the know than myself. I was considering buying some play sand to use in my water pan, but ran across an extra bag of pea gravel I had left over from another project. I filled the water pan with the pea gravel and covered it with foil. I am assuming this will work the same as the sand would, if not better, to help maintain and control temps in my Master Forge gasser. Any thoughts?

Only draw back to gravel i could see would be If you get high enough temps you could get some popping gravel. Make sure and cover gravel w/ foil to keep the drippings off.

 I thought about the same thing, so I have it covered with foil and have had a butt in since about 8:00 am and the temps are holding so much better than they did before. I should have done this a long time ago.

in my mirianski book of smoke house building and design, they have a design in it that uses rock like that as diffuser to help disperse heat and smoke, so I think you should be ok

It has worked like a charm all day. I have not touched the needle valve in about 5-6 hours to adjust the temp. I cant believe how steady it is holding. Moves up and down 3-4 degrees. Man, what a difference.

The picture is from the Peruvian Andes this past September. My wife and I did a 7 day lodge to lodge trek for our honeymoon ending at Machu Picchu. That was an acclimation hike up to Humantay Glacier Lake at 14,000 ft. It was being fed by the glacial runoff of the 19,000 ft Humantay Mountain in the background. By far the coolest trip either of us has ever been on.

  great . it is easy to smoke with  MES .the color of the water and the mountain's remind me of Chile (next door)

I've been using sand for a long time, may have to give the gravel a try. Thanks!
