I want to start making oval loaves of SD. Not sure on the dutch oven size... found a pit boss 6qt that is roughly 17"L x 8"W and an oval banneton that is roughly 10"L by 6"W. Does that sound about right? Many thanks!

Ive onl y made round boules for years and ready for some ovals

I took a hard look at them before Christmas . I was looking at the ones dedicated for bread baking . Most that I found were 12 " inside . I did look at the pit boss one , but took it off my list .
Biggest reason was the handles weren't offset top to bottom . When that thing is 450 degrees I didn't want to have a hard time getting the lid off .
I also like the sallow bottom on the bread ovens .

Those are just two things I was considering when I was looking . Not really an answer to the question , just something to think about ,, maybe .

I was looking at this one . Had a deal on it at 80 bucks and I missed it .

So I've been proofing in the oval banneton , then open baking on a stone with a pre heated cast iron skillet that I throw ice in when the bread goes in .

that one looks nice and I would pay 80 for it, but not 120.

You got one of the Cuisiland? Oval loafs fit good in there?

ok, I might throwdown for the one with the workable handles. reviews confirm its hard to get the lid off and lord knows I dont need to drop a scorching hot mass of cast iron on me or the floor.

Welp...I tried to take the lid (the bottom) off my round lodge Dutch oven with hot mitts on as if i made a loaf. I would say it was impossible with out rotating the handles. So the pit boss one is out. Like go with the one you linked up - the Cuisiland. Gonna let it marinate and see if the price drops. the only other one that is similar is $300 and that just a crime.

Is that the Challenger ? That's a great pan .
My round bread oven is a Le Creuset that my Son bought me a year ago Christmas . 300 bucks . Now I would have never bought that for myself , but after using it , I would .
was impossible without rotating the handles.
That's why I mentioned it . I try to not over shadow the question with " me " ,, but that was worth the mention .
There's other ovals out there .

Watch the size on some of the cheaper ones . 9 to 10 inches on the inside . The last couple ovals I did were less than that , and were fine for us .

Yes, it was the challenger. I would love one, having that inner struggle with the cost. $300 for cast iron just feels like its over priced. still simmering... Challenger reviews: some said it was nice, but not worth the cost.

thank you for mentioning the handles. I wasnt too sure till I tried it was obviously a deal breaker.

I don't use it for bread yet, but I do use this for soups, stews, and chili.
I don't see why it wouldn't work great for baking bread.

I mean...it not like its gonna wear out or break.
Right . I use that Le Creuset all the time . I can do a split 500 gram batch as an oval loaf in it , plus it was a gift . I also have good results open baking on a stone .
It's not the money , just needs to make sense .
If I didn't have one , I would by the Challenger .
I used to do it in my cast iron D.O. with good results . That dedicated bread oven does a far better job .

Wife doesnt want me to throw down for it...Gonna wait a while and snag one on the DL. She will like it. She was very hesitant about the Rec Teq - till she ate some product.
