I have never liked the charcoal ring being separate from the charcoal grate. One of the benefits of the WSM is snuffing the fire and being able to save the charcoal for another cook. After snuffed and cooled you shake the ash off, dump it and add new charcoal to the old. Works great in my mini-wsms because the charcoal basket is one piece.well today I fixed the 14.5. Got out the grinder and the welder and joined the two pieces together. Now I have a one piece charcoal basket that I can shake the ash from!!! If one didn't have a welder you could wire the two together. This is going to make life so much easier!

Great idea Case!  I will be wiring my 18.5 basket to the grate.  "Sniffing" the fire sounds like a horrible idea though!

Sniffing the fire is the only way to know when the smoke is just right, come on everyone knows that!

Yeah the 18 will be getting the same treatment before it's next use. I don't know why I didn't do this earlier.

Why don't they already do this at the factory???

Great idea Case!

So simple yet no one thought of doing it.

I don't have a welder but will definitely wire mine up!

I had to give you a point for this one!

Thanks!

Thanks Al.

When I got my 18 I thought man these two should be joined together! Every time I used it I was like I should weld these together. Then I bought the 14 and I guess I was so excited I forgot until I used it each time!

Now it's done! Still have to do the same to the 18, probably will forget!
