I just bought my first electric smoker the MES 30" and also got the stand and offset cold smoker unit.  I read about it being to hot for cold smoking and extended it out a bit.  All I could find was galvanized and thought it would be more sturdy and built a pipe and then later read that you shouldn't use galvanized.

I read other places you can use it just so it doesn't come in contact with acidic foods or very high temps.

It's not going to contact food, but not sure what high temp means?  I seen 392F and also seen somewhere around 1400F or so.

If 392F is the temp to worry about, the pipe end coming out of the cold unit, I wonder how hot that gets there?

I think I'm going to call it good as all I can find is galvanized around here at my local Home Depot and Lowe's.

What do others think?  Safe or not Safe?  Or will that extra distance even make any difference?

http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/t/100584/galvanized-steel was discussion of galvanized and food contact. i Goggled galvanized steel food safety which gave temperatures of vaporizing zinc . I would think it would be better to be safe than sorry and use steel or stainless steel. i cannot figure with picture what size pipe you need, did you think to try a muffler shop, pipe supply house, or other source of pipe.I know pails and tubs are galvanized and used in food but you introduce heat, I would avoid zinc. Most food contact equipment now is stainless steel instead of zinc coated. I know zinc coated coal buckets used as ash buckets will rust quick . I would check ebay for materials, I needed sheet copper for a welding spoon and many people sold small lots. I hope this helps. Post about your goodies when you get smoking. Mark
