So, my 17 year old son is taking an Ag Science class in high school, surprisingly they are teaching them how to weld in the class. So when he said that he was having problems with (in his works) "sticking the rod".

I had to pull out the old stick machine and give him a little stick time……. It’s been a long time since I welded with a stick machine….but you know, there’s one thing about it…..It’s like riding a bicycle….you never forget how….After about 8 hours over two days he’s running some pretty decent looking stringer beads…  He still needs practice…… but at least he’s willing to try….more than most kids his age these days……..What he doesn’t know is I need someone to weld on my new build coming up pretty soon and he is going to be it…..It’s hell being the new guy……. I love having a sous chef, but a sous welder??!!!!!  Now that's living!  Doesn't it put a big smile on your face to see your son working hard?  Things like this will give him the confidence to tackle all kinds of things life will throw at him.  Congrats!

Cool deal. And your right Allot of kids don't want to try, they are more interested in video games and cell. And some teachers don't care ether. My son took an electricity class, this teacher knew not much, but thought he knew it all. My son was struggling so he asked for my help. I helped him with his home work, and at conferences teacher told me my son was doing below par work. Now this teacher had no clue I was an electrician. I said that's interesting as I check his work, and I know its right. So I asked to see the work. It was wrong cause it was not "text book" answers. The teacher wasn't going to budge on grade so I drug him in front of school board. When I explained the situation and produced my electrical license to the board, his grade was changed.  There I go again getting off topic.

LOL Each one of my three Girls have been trained to cook and at about age 13 they are taught to hand make Pasta...After training that girl becomes the Expert and is responsible for making the pasta each time we have it...As the next youngest came of age, she then became the new Expert...My youngest, now 15, thinks this tradition, "Sucks"..."This is wrong, Dad, I'll be doing this for ever!"...Ain't it Great having and Teaching your Kids to do Stuff!...Hehe

I think it's awesome that your son is learning some basic skills!!!

I learned how to weld in 8th grade shop class, and was my first experience with metal working machines.

My shop teacher was Mr Kenfield.  He left a very good impression on me and I thank him for teaching me the basics.

Many shop classes have gone away, because of budget cuts and liability issues.

It seems that computer skills are more important than anything else in school today

Skilled labor is just as important!!!

Boy needs to get them leathers dirty!!!

Welding is a path i do not for one day regret going down. Never really understood why but after a long day welding at the shop, nothing more relaxing than going home and working with my tig!

I couldn't agree with you more.

Congrats on the new welder. My son is a welder  but he lives in California....so I do not get much use from his skills...
