Home is Nashville, Tennessee, overlooking the Cumberland River in West Nashville. My wife and I have an 18 month old son and a daughter showing up here in a month or so. I snagged a Weber Genesis off facebook marketplace and I'm pretty proficient at grilling with it, but I'm getting bored. I love some good Q and want to introduce smoke but I'm not ready to pull the trigger on a smoker. I'd love some gas grill smoking tips for how to make delicious meats that are easy on the wallet. I teach at a local high school and work part-time at a church here in town with the youth group. Looking forward to this forum!

fivetricks has a good answer there. As an alternative you can also cook on indirect heat and make smoke pouches with foil and wood chips as well or a smoker box. Have done both of those with pretty good results.

Welcome , I dont think the tray burns very well in a gas grill, a tube works better for low oxygen set ups

Welcome from NorCal and a Commodore. I never had much luck getting smoke flavor out of my now defunct gas grill. Best results I had were two wood pouches on the burners and cooking baby back ribs on the warming rack.

Enjoy SMF!

Well from Knoxvegas! Great advice above. Try a smoke tube or you can get chip boxes for gas grills off amazon or places like Home Depot. Lots of stuff to grill/smoke that are easy on the wallet. What do you like to grill for the most part?

Just wanted to say welcome, I stopped using gas years ago. So I'm of no help.

I like grilling burgers and pork tenderloins and steaks. I got a smoker box to put on top of flavorizer bars and I'm experimenting with it right now. After about three hours around 225 degrees with apple chips in the smoke box, my tenderloin is at 140 degrees, but I'm wondering how to restore some moisture to the meat. It looks a bit dry. Any tips on using the smoke box/gas grill? What meat should I try next? Does anybody grill like normal but add the smoke box in for a bit of extra flavor?

Dijon mustard goes very well with pork tenderloin if it us a little dry.

Wings are always something you could do well on the grill too. Haven't tried a smoker box on my gasser before.

For tenderloins I like to take about a quart of apple cider, two tablespoons of butter, one teaspoon each of nutmeg and cinnamon and reduce it down until it's a syrupy consistency. Really goes well with pork. You can adjust the nutmeg and cinnamon to your liking.

Welcome!

I'm new to this forum as well, my wife is also expecting, and I have a Weber Genesis that I use almost daily. Great to see some relatable folks on here!

Those smoke boxes over the diffusers work alright. My biggest issue with the Weber is that the smoke tends to escape the BBQ very quickly. But if you are willing to top up your chips with some regularity, or have a supply of tinfoil pockets on hand, it can work out. Indirect heat on the front burner, and placing your meat on the warming rack can work out well. Place a metal tray of liquid underneath the warming rack to add some moisture and collect your drippings. Dripping collection is a real thing when using a genesis. I did a 25lb pig leg 2 years ago and didn't set up a grease collection method. Because I did it with indirect heat, the grease covered all my diffusers, burners, etc. Next time I started it up it was a grease a fire the likes of which I've never seen. .... You only make that mistake once.

Happy smoking and all the best to you and your family!
Cheers,
Ry
