Need some advice on some mods for my Oklahoma Joe

Ive read several posts where everyone suggests using a tuning plate. Well i found one from horizons for 75 dollars. I really dont want to pay that so do yall know of any alternatives of how to do a homemade one. Also i was curious about extending the smoke stack down using a dryer vent. What is the purpose of that?
