I am looking to purchase another smoker I had started with a small one but now I am looking at a masterbuilt 30" smoker I can anyone give me advice on either the electric or propane. Thanks for your help
Wish I could help, I burn either charcoal or wood so I'm no expert about watt or dino fuel burners. What are you going to base your decision on? Will you keep it at home by the outlet?
Thank you alblancher. Yes I'm going to have it at my home only just wasn't sure what one is better. I am worried with the propane smoker about getting that taste in the meat
A lot of people will disagree with you about that. I do believe that judging from the number of members that use electric vs propane electric has some type of advantage. Everyone talks about up grading to the larger MES or wishing they had purchased the larger one. I think there are issues about the electronics or something like that. I'm sure a watt burner will chime in with better advice
Hey bubmil0630. It's really hard to lend a suggestion as to which type smoker is best for you...that really is a personal decision. If you tell us a bit more about how you want to use your smoker, what you'd like to smoke and your location (you really should update your location in your profile) we might be able to lend some advice.
As for your statement about propane imparting a 'taste' to your product. I can tell you based on personal experience that I do not find that to be the case what so ever. I have several charcoal smokers, one LP gasser and a stick burner. Although the bark and smoke ring is just a tad different in my LP smoker than from the charcoal and stick burner smokers, there is no taste of LP. None...So you may want to discount that idea as a negative regarding purchasing an LP smoker.
Let us know a little more about your plans and I'm sure a bunch of members will post advice and info.
I have the electric 40 MES and I enjoy the "ease' of it, thats why I bought it for the house. If you travel, or take your smoker everywhere I would say go propane. If its for the house only I would say go eletric. I know when I went BACK to cooking on charcoal we noticed a big difference from the propane I had been using, so I believe there is a taste difference when using propane, but thats just me.Plus with propane I always found myself running out of fuel at the worst times. I live in a small town and have fewer places to get fuel, unless you do the exchange bottles and grab your ass when their done with you.
Gasser vs. a watt burner......you never have to run to the store and get more watts, they bring them to you! plus is a set it and almost forget it kinda deal (as long as you use a remote thermo or check on it often)
I have both & a charcoal smoker too. They all have their advantages. Electric is very easy to use. Propane gets much higher temps. & charcoal or wood seems to have the best flavor. The one thing you will not get is any taste from the propane.
thank you all for the help I ended up getting an electric smoker. Now my next question I was told to let the smoker run for 3 hrs. and put my wood chips in it for the last 45 min. did anyone else do this. and also I was told to wipe down the inside of it with alittle vegetable oil after cleaning it so the next use will be easier to clean up. any thoughts on this.
. Very glad you chose the BEST "Q" forum on the NET. It's ashamed you're not a Wood burner, but that's just MY personal option(the flavor is sooooooo much better though).
Yes, what has been stated is the Seasoning process, kinda like a Cast iron Pan. As I said I am a wood burner:
and , however there are a lot of Watt-Burners on and they can guide you down the path to proficiency. Questions are welcome and there is no dumb question (except the one not asked).
