That didn't work, nothing worked to get me out of safe mode including pulling the plug and leaving it dead for 20 minutes. I could find no way to get back in normal mode so in desparation after a hour of trying I did a restore. If that hadn't worked I was going to do a hard drive format which would have totally sucked.
I know there is a way to select what mode you want it is either f2 or f 12 or something when first booting up, and it may be different on different machines.
Glad you didn't have to format. That is a royal pain.
I run EI 8 The yahoo tool bar caused so many problems on my computer I removed it.
I would go to View ...... toolbars...... disable Yahoo toolbar.....Every thing would work tickety boo and then in about an hour or two of web browsing there it would appear, enabled again all by itself. So I finally junked it all together.
Not sure why you were stuck exactly but there is a file in the Windows files named MSDOS.SYS that is a read only file. It most likely would have shown SAFE Mode=1. That would have needed to be changed to Safe Mode=0. You would have needed to change the attributes (right click and uncheck read only) then alter the line.
Sounds like you got it done with a restore.
Just curious - Did you at any time enter the system BIOS and make any changes? Did you use the MSCONFIG mode at all? If you were in the Boot.INI area and checked the box next to /safeboot you would have been stuck in safemode until that was cleared.
Just another nod for running a non-Windows OS such as Linux. Ubuntu and Linux Mint are fairly easy for newcomers, with Linux Mint having more media options (such as mp3) from the git go.
For those on Windows uncomfortable with switching their OS, using Firefox or Opera as suggested is the next best thing.
There are several free anti-virus programs out there that are just as good, if not better than, as the paid for versions of McAfee or Norton/Symantec. See this thread at the Malwarebyte's forum
