This sounds like the best soulution yet. You will never avoid these types of threads entirely. Even a thread that is not political can easily veer into a political discussion. Politics is the 800 pound gorilla in the room and not easily avoided in discussion. Having it as a subscribed to subforum should work for everyone. Those who do not want to read or participate will never even see the thread while those who do will. Sounds like freedom of choice to me good job Deltadude

I want to say and thank everyone who has posted here, for a political thread this is one of the best and most polite ones I have been part of. It has fostered some great ideas too. I think our forum is plenty big enough to have a "off topic" area. I read a lot here but not everything and I choose at anytime to go "pass" and move to the next topic or thread, I think we all should do that with any thread that becomes political or anything else controversial if it is not you cup of tea. As Deltadude said we all have a common interest here, but what makes us different is also cool in my book.
My Dutch Grandfather taught me to respect my elders and my betters and I was taught to cook by a family of old Italians so respect for others comes pretty easy for me. Got the lups on the back of my head to prove I learned it (eventually).
I don't think it needs to be a subscribed thread. It just needs to be a separate sub forum, that way if someone want's to participate, they can, otherwise just ignore it.
What are you apologizing for?
You posted something that has an obvious political message behind it, and people naturally start expressing their opinion regarding that message. What did you expect? There is no controversy! The only reason something seems amiss is SMF has decided to restrict threads that are intended to be solely political. Your thread wasn't intended that way (of course some will disagree), and no one is getting out of line by insulting others.
People are expressing themselves, and that is a good thing, until it becomes negative as in flaming or insulting the person and not the information.
Despite my own political predisposition (and I most certainly have one) I am going to have to agree with about 90% of the posts in this thread. For the sake of not quoting everybody here, this is what I think... I absolutely love hearing informative (if not occasionally loony) opinions, seeing comical threads, and hearing about things that people care about in this forum's general discussion section. Nobody should feel bad about posting anything on this forum as long as its civil and, for the most part, PC (yes, I know many of you hate the term 'politically correct', but I'm just sayin don't be a jerk). The only issue I have with this type of content is that I have seen a number of forums become hostile environments once things turn to politics. While the moderators and members of this site are amazing, as this site grows in population, so will the extremes. I've always been told 'don't talk politics or religion at the dinner table' and this is about as close as it comes to the online dinner table for me, so I just don't want to see another site devolve into partison bickering. The thing I love most about sites like this is that you feel like you're part of one big family where everyone wants to help and listen to everyone else. So, I guess I just hope everyone realizes how high tensions can get on things like this these days. While I don't mind hearing other people's political opinions, I go to other sites for that. So what i'm saying is, despite political opinions/race/creed, I like anyone that will give me a good Butt Rub!
Well said, my thoughts exactly----I would throw religion in the same bracket. Around here it is a serious "No-No" to talk religion or politics in a bar, even among "BEST FRIENDS".
