mods for smoker

I borrowed this smoker from my brother in law because he is thinking of selling and I may want to buy.  Yesterday I just bent a couple of sheet pans like I have in my trailmaster.  The gap to the fire box is pretty big and there is no tuning at all in it.  My dad can have something welded at his work, but i need an idea on what measurements to send him
