MES Door Glass

So how do you all keep the glass on the door of the MES's clean?

I kind of figured that it would have smoke residue on it after each smoke but figured that I could easily wipe it clean each time.

Today I did my first smoke and afterwards I wiped the inside down. I got most of the residue off the glass but there is still a lot at the bottom and around the edges. I really don't mind some residue but I can see that fairly quickly it will have the entire glass coated and it will be od little use.

I know that using cleaning agents is a no-no, but what is the best way to get the residue off and then to keep it clean?

I've used Magic Eraser, Simple Green, and Weber Grill Cleaner and sprayed with water in a spray bottle over those cleaners and then used a  gray or lighter scotch brite pad rubbed lightly on glass to loosen the stain. Then wiped with bounty paper towels, followed by plain water and towels 1 or 2 times and my glass is sparkling clean. They all worked with very little effort.

However, the last 2 times I have smoked, I tried Dawn Foamy Soap in a blue bottle. Bottle says it is 5 times stronger than any other detergent and I must admit that it is. I sprayed a bit of foam on the glass and sprayed water real light with a spray bottle, let sit for 30 seconds or so and the stain simply melted off the glass. Wiped it off with Bounty Paper towels, followed by 2 more spray and wipe with water and paper towels. This took all of 2 1/2 - 3 minutes at the most and is my future method from now on.

Bear recently posted coating the glass with Rain X keeps the glass cleaner during smokes and easier to clean. Makes sense and I intend to try that but have to buy some Rain X first.

Have you ever tried a simple single edge razor blade?

Takes too long, too much effort to do that, danger of scratching glass, and etc. Methods I mentioned takes 2 1/2 to 3 minutes. A razor blade takes a big gob of minutes, plus glass still has to be washed after.

Thanks guys, I'll look for that cleaner, Dawn foamy Soap tomorrow when we for groceries.

I just wasn't sure what was found as a good way to clean. I did not try any cleaners as I did not want to have that residue burn off during a smoke and impart a flavor that is not good.

So RainX is safe? I would think that something that is in RainX would bake out. But I can see how "waxing" the glass 1st would help ease cleaning.

The Dawn Blue Bottle will have a 5 X  on the neck of it and saying "absorbs 5 times more grease".

It's easier to clean with water when the smoker is still warm.  I usually don't want to mess with it right when I'm done smoking.  I don't clean it every smoke so I spray fume free oven cleaner very lightly and use a paper plate to make sure there is no over spray on the metal.  I let it sit for five minutes and squeegee from the bottom up.  I have a dedicated $.99 dust pan with a rubber squeegee edge to collect the gunk.  Then wash the window with paper towels and water to remove residual chemicals.  I'm sure there is no harm to the glass after all it's an oven.  I've tried all kinds of methods and this one saves a ton of paper towels

So far I haven't had a problem using a bucket of really hot water and a wash cloth. Some spots take more elbow grease but it still comes off and leaves the glass pretty clean.

Went looking for the Dawn foaming soap, no luck. AT least at Wally-World.

Will have to look at our stores in area.

I will have to try the rubbing alcohol thing. We always have that at the house.

Not sure if I would use the oven cleaner, I guess if I heated it back up after cleaning to "burn" off any nasty chemicals.

Thanks for the ideas and help.

I didn't actually try Rain-X to keep the glass cleaner.

    I did it for "Condensation":

I never had trouble with excess Condensation with my Gen #1 MES 40 glass, but the glass on my new Gen #2.5 builds up condensation really bad & it runs down & forms puddles, and leaks out the bottom.

I didn't use it much since due to the whether, but the initial testing was Great----NO Condensation formed on the glass.

    That's funny,

When I click on the link my and timberjet's private message exchange comes up every time...Perhaps the link address is for individuals' private messages.  That is probably why your private messages pop up instead of mine.

Well Anyway,  This is the summary of the exchange:

Timberjet explained how various Scotch Brite scouring pads can affect the surface of the glass.  The reason they come in various colors is because of their abrasion qualities.

In a nut shell the only ones to use on tempered glass (or any glass for that matter) are the white or blue Scotch Brite pads.  White being the least abrasive of the two but both are made for glass and any surface you do not wish to scratch.  I can find them with no problem at my local hardware store, Walmart, or grocery store.  The white ones are the hardest to  find so I always use the blue ones.

Mix Ammonia, Water, and Dawn Dishwashing Liquid together and the combination will cut through any grease, smoke residue, or dirt on your MES glass.  Timberjet never did say what ratio to mix the three so I just mix it: 1:2:2 drops in a quart spray bottle (Ammonia:Water:Dawn).  Spray the solution onto the glass, lightly scour with either the white or blue Scotch Brite pad and wipe dry with a paper towel.  Easy and effective!

    I hope this helps,

    John
