Good morning everyone!

Been a few years since I posted on here and have a question. I'm upgrading from my vertical propane smoker to an MES 40 after reading so many great things. Im trying to figure out which version is being sold on Amazon:

Masterbuilt 20075315 Front Controller Smoker with Viewing Window and RF Remote Control

I read bearcarvers post on telling the difference which was awesome, but the pictures appear to have 2 different versions. The vent in this version is on the top which makes it sound like version 2.5, but the water pan is small and slanted which points to a version 2. Clearly from all the reviews I want to make sure I get the version 2.5.

Any thoughts appreciated!

If that water pan is small & hanging on the left end of a slanted Drip Plate, that would be a Gen #2.
Not one of the Favored MES units.

Some of the newer Gen #2 units have the top vent on the back corner of the top, instead of on the top of the side.

The Small Water Pan in the #2 isn't slanted. The Drip plate it hangs from is slanted.

The Water pan in the Gen #2.5 has a bottom that is deeper on the left than the right ( I call it "Split Level" bottom)

I will say that I ended up with the Sportsman's Elite gen 2 from Cabela's and I have no complaints. I did remove the slant tray and just run a cookie sheet off the bottom rack but I find that my temps in the smoker are fairly even. I was getting 10 to 15 degree temp swings around my set point which isn't all that terrible for what we are doing. I like toys and just had to try out a PID on my smoker which really helped with the temp swings but in all honesty its not really needed.

I'm glad to hear that.
I've been telling people with Gen #2 units to do that (Remove the slanted drip tray & put a foil pan on the bottom rack), but it was only my theory, because I don't use a Gen #2.

I still try to get people to stay away from the Gen #2, because most of the problems have been coming from them, and the whole Masterbuilt company has gotten a bad rap for it.
