MES 30 Remote issue

I have had this smoker for a couple of years, today as I use it for the first time this year, the remote wont work. I installed new batteries and can see the display come on for a second and then off. The on/off button doesn't do anything. 

Has anyone had this problem before?

I had a similar problem when I installed a new controler on my 2 year old Gen 2.0

I looked in my Masterbuilt book that came with the smoker and there were instructions to put it "back in sync" when it doesn't work. I tried that and it then it worked again.
