I bought my MES 30 digital, model #20070910, in May. I use it several times a week but it's not even a year old. I clean with a sponge, dish soap and warm water. A while back I noticed some discoloring on one of my cooking racks and I called Masterbuilt.

At first I thought it was rust but looking closer it appeared that it was a copper colored metal and maybe the original coating had worn away??? Anyways Masterbuilt sent me a free cooking rack to replace it.

A few months later I noticed more of my racks doing the same. I called Masterbuilt and since I was no longer under warranty they couldn't replace the racks for free but they sold them to me at 50% off. I now have 9 cooking racks for my MES.

Problem is now more of them are starting to discolor.

Am I the only unlucky person? Has anyone else had this issue? Is it a major concern for contaminating food?

Them dang chinese is trying to kill us..

I like to keep a big coating of smoked crud on mine...

I don't scrub my racks after every smoke . wipe of any stuck bits and leave the seasoning on them .

I would think that the Chinese chrome is very thin to say the least and doesn't take much scrubbing to take it off. I use frog mats under my meat so I don't get a lot of crud on the racks untill about the third smoke, at that time I stick them in the dishwasher and they come out shiny and clean, I suspect the scrubbing is taking off the chrome.

I usually hand wash the racks in my MES30 before each smoke. But last weekend I was busy, so I scrubbed off most of the gunk and put them in the dishwasher. I popped it open immediately after it was finished drying, and my racks look very much like the ones above. I still think it's rust, but I've never seen rust hit anything so quickly before.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I brought this to the attention of customer service at Masterbuilt in an email. They were mum about the rust issue, but offered to sell me some more racks at $8 apiece, + shipping. I'm not too pleased.
