they do get warm to touch but I think if there was a problem with fumes there would be a whole lot of us getting sick here on smf.
I had considered getting a bare metal mailbox for this reason, though. Burning paint fumes sounds nasty! :-)
I’ve had mine going since noon. When I get home I’ll check the surface temp.I do suspect most of these are powder coated these days, which doesn't scare me as much as paint would. I haven't gotten my mailbox set up yet.

I can hold my hand over the pellet tray on the outside for a six count. So it is hot but not hot enough to do harm.I’ve had mine going since noon. When I get home I’ll check the surface temp.
