Question ? Mahi Mahi ?
I never tried it !
I have had fresh Tuna steaks
Can you tell me what it tastes like? Can you please give me a close idea to what it is ?
Grilled or Pan fried ? Clueless ?
We have a local Mexican Take out that does Mahi Burritos ?
Kinda skeptical to try it ?
Thanks ! ELF

Good fish. big flakes of white firm flesh. Similar to snapper, but larger flakes. excellent table fare....assuming it is fresh.

FYI-never eat fish in a restaurant on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday- unless the restaurant specifically states that they get fresh fish daily. Most get fish for the week in one big order on thursdays usually for weekend service...then have fish specials early in the week to move out old fish.

Agreed, it's a wonderful firm and flaky white fleshed fish, and the flavor is sweet and mild.
Think the fore-mentioned Red Snapper or better yet Halibut.
Pan fry, deep fry, grill or bake it, it lends itself well to many of the most popular cooking methods and recipes.

Pan fried with crispy skin, seasoned with Cajun spice or a chile citrus blend and served with some sort of salsa or fruit chutney... Dammit man!

Had a Thai place serve it deep fried in a coconut macadamia crust and in a spicy yellow curry with chunks of onion, carrot and bell pepper... It was heavenly.

There are very few fish that I enjoy eating. Mahi Mahi is the top one for me.

Less often I enjoy Halibut, Tuna and fresh caught Trout.

Fresh or fresh flash frozen Dorado/ IE: Mahi mahi, is amazing fish, it's super mild in flavor, shouldn't have any of that funky fishy taste to it at all.
I always wondered why they didn't call it chicken of the sea instead of tuna. Dorado/ Mahi is WAY less fishy tasting than any of the tuna's that I've eaten, fresh and canned at home Bluefin, Yellowfin, Bigeye, and Albacore.

Ask the Chef if he will grill you up a bite sized sample before you order, I know our Mexican joints around here would be happy to do so.

I say go for it, what do you have to lose, $8.00 to $14 bucks, you just may end up loving it.

Those Mahi Burritos are probably tilapia.
Never assume that the fish you get at a restaurant is the fish you ordered. With the exception of salmon, since that one is hard to fake. You'd be surprised at the amount of fish fraud.

My go-to recipe for Mahi is to grill it. Just salt and pepper. Or a good coating of chili powder, paprika, garlic and onion power,

Like others said, its a white flaky fish. Flavor is mild. Quite forgiving with over-cooking (unlike tuna or wahoo).

If you're buying it to cook at home, ask the fishmonger if you can do a smell test. If it smells "fishy" it's not fresh. If the head is still on, pay attention to the eyes. If they look red, sunken in, it's not fresh. The nicer the eyes, the fresher the fish.

You couldn't pass off Tilapia for Dorado to anybody that know anything about saltwater fish. I refuse to eat any "farmed" fish like 99.9% of Tilapia served are, their flesh is mushy, and have very fine flakes when cooked much like a lot of other freshwater fish is, and their myomeres are nothing like a Dorado's.

If you're worried about freshness with any fish, buy fresh flash frozen fish, most of it is processed on board the fishing vessel. Meaning it is caught, iced, stored packed in shaved ice or a slush in the fish holds until they are full. Then cleaned, butchered and flash frozen before the fish ever hits the shore, it's the next best thing to fresh fish, sometimes it's better than fresh fish.

My favorite as long as it's Fresh and for me that's a day or two max. Never buy it from the store myself. Only get it from friends who fish. If the blood line is brown and not a nice pink/red I pass. Hard to tell what you're getting in a restaurant though. When I get it fresh it's a simple coat of olive oil with a little salt and pepper. Pan fried or grilled are both great! It's an Awesome eating fish as long as fresh IMHO!

You bring up a great point that I missed.
Always cut out the bloodline on any type of fish, it's where all the bad crap gets stored in fish.
